It seems to make sense. If your body needs to rid itself of chemicals and toxins that are a result of extended drug or alcohol abuse, shouldn’t we get them out as quickly as possible? And wouldn’t a quicker detox mean shorter time of going through withdrawals? A rapid detox seems like a logical move on the outside, but overall, it has multiple downsides and can even pose significant health risks.

Detox Is

In general, detoxing the human body means taking deliberate actions to rid the body of chemicals and impurities causing harm. There are different levels of detoxing that can be as simple as drinking vitamin infused drinks or detox teas for a day or two to more extreme methods.

The most serious cases come in ridding the body of the chemicals that result from extended drugs and/or alcohol use. In situations such as these, precautions must be taken to ensure a person’s safety and health. Drug and alcohol detox without the wherewithal and knowledge is a risk and liability.

But more than ridding the body of toxins, in drug and alcohol addiction, a person’s brain has put limits on its production of certain chemicals necessary for life. Why? Because it was getting them from the drugs. The person has become “dependent” on the substance in order to get what it needs to live. It’s a natural adaptation, but to cut out the drugs or alcohol quickly and without help is dangerous.

What is Rapid Detox?

A Rapid detox (otherwise known as the Waismann Method, named for one of the creators) claims to be able to completely detoxify a person from opiates in a matter of hours. A patient is given an anesthetic and then administered an opiate blocker such as naltrexone. This all happens in a short period of time and the person is sent away after a couple of days.

Most of the time the withdrawal symptoms are still present. If a person with a substance abuse disorder is sent home after a couple of days, still experiencing physical pain, discomfort, and cravings—this is a relapse recipe for disaster.

The Problem

Scientifically speaking, rapid detox is an amazing feat. However, detox is more than the physical removal of a drug. Detox is a preparation. It is the crucial first step of a recovery process. It is a place for a person to reorient themselves and go through the process of moving their lives in the direction of transformation.

Full addiction treatment is never a quick fix; it is a deep dive into where the addiction comes from in the first place. It is learning new habits and creating new approaches to interacting with everything in the world. It’s comprehensive. And it takes time.
